Mit einer jährlichen Sommerakademie mit Meisterkursen fördert das Musikforum Mannheim seit 2003 internationale Musikstudenten und deren Spiel auf Originalinstrumenten. Aufgrund dieser Aktivitäten war im Jubiläumsjahr 2007 erstmals wieder die Mannheimer Hofkapelle in Originalbesetzung und auf Originalinstrumenten im Mannheimer Schloss zu hören.
Die Forschung nach einer Aufführungspraxis, die dem damaligen weltberühmten Klangkörper sehr nahe kommt, und die praktische Umsetzung im Live-Konzert war geglückt. Das Zusammenbringen von jungen Künstlern mit ihren erfahrenen Lehrern und Solisten unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Florian Heyerick wurde zu einem eindrucksvollen Erlebnis.

Ziel ist es Mannheim und seine historische Bedeutung überregional darzustellen sowie die Wiederbelebung Mannheims als Treffpunkt neuer musikalischer Strömungen zu erreichen. Zahlreiche begleitende Gespräche mit internationalen Musikwissenschaftlern und Künstlern haben bestätigt, dass die Arbeit auf dem Gebiet der „Mannheimer Schule" unter Aspekten der historischen Aufführungspraxis immens wichtig ist. Dabei wäre eine regelmäßige Arbeit auf diesem Gebiet wünschenswert und notwendig: Ständige Beratung und Unterstützung historischer und aufführungspraktischer Informationen zur Mannheimer Hofkapelle und die praktische Umsetzung der Forschung mit der Mannheimer Hofkapelle.

2008 wird an diese Erfahrungen angeknüpft. Der wissenschaftliche Anteil im Rahmen der Sommerakademie soll durch Vorträge, Symposien etc. erhöht werden. Eine Konzentration auf das Thema "Mannheimer Schule" soll stattfinden und so steht bei der Orchesterakademie auch in diesem Jahr wieder die Musik der Mannheimer Schule im Zentrum.
Neben Einzelunterricht und Orchesterproben besteht auch die Möglichkeit für Kammermusikstunden.
Als Ergebnis der Kurswoche wird wieder ein Orchesterprogramm mit der "Mannheimer Hofkapelle" im Mannheimer Schloss präsentiert,  in dem die eingeladenen Dozenten - Spezialisten der historischer Aufführungspraxis - gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmern der Akademie spielen. Das Orchester wird am Originalschauplatz die Musik der Zeit Carl Theodors so einzigartig auf Originalinstrumenten interpretieren, wie das berühmte Orchester des Kurfürsten gleichen Namens.

Dear residents of the Kurpfalz region!

It is a great pleasure for me to contribute to reviving the performance of old music in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, and thus to support an attractive, inviting and challenging initiative in and around Mannheim.
Mannheim needs a centre for old music - not just for historical reasons, but because such a lively city that is open to new musical ideas ought to play a key role in a worldwide revival of this style and taste. For me, it is extremely important to unite young and experienced musicians, famous and less famous music, old and new ideas, soloists and ensembles, and regional and international ambitions in an ideal musical world - which everyone can look forward to.
So please come along and listen, join in and sweep Mannheim along into this unique world of historical sounds.

I would like to send the Academia Palatina on its way with these words of Gustav Mahler. With its concept, the Academia has set itself an ambitious goal that is worthy of support in the vibrant intellectual and cultural life of the city of Mannheim - and for which I have gladly accepted the role of patron: We wish to inspire a young audience to take an interest in classical music.

Baden-Württemberg boasts a large cultural diversity that has grown over the centuries. The state government sees the preservation of this heritage as a contribution towards stimulating our cultural life today. Culture is mainly kept alive by the commitment of individuals, by establishments, companies and personages that promote art and by voluntary organisations. The Academia Palatina will help bring classical music to children and young people, and awaken young people's interest in historical culture.

I wish the Academia Palatina a great deal of public attention and support for its work.
